Mosaic

Mosaic is a photographic work exploring the tension between censorship and expression, based on the technique of photo mosaic.

The work began with an everyday question. Watching tattoos and smoking scenes blurred out on television, YouTube, films, and dramas, there were moments where it felt like too much. Censorship remains a heavily debated issue. In a liberal democratic society, where does ethical and moral censorship end and freedom of expression begin — that boundary is what this work set out to examine.

A figure holding a cigarette serves as the central image, a subject frequently targeted by censorship in contemporary media, chosen to emphasize its symbolic weight. The cigarette is left fully visible while the surrounding areas are rendered through photo mosaic. Within the mosaic, everyday photographs and images related to censorship are layered together using image processing techniques. Through the contrast of positive and negative imagery — and the inversion that mosaic itself implies — the work makes the conflict between censorship and expression visible.

The work did not fully realize the depth of thought the subject deserved, and there are parts that fell short of what was intended. Even so, the hope is that it offers a small opportunity to think about censorship — where it is necessary, and where it is not.

《Mosaic》는 포토 모자이크 기법을 기반으로 검열과 표현의 대립을 다룬 사진 작업이다.

작업의 출발점은 일상적인 의문에서 시작됐다. 방송, 유튜브, 영화, 드라마에서 타투나 흡연 장면을 모자이크로 가리는 특정 장면들을 보며 '이거는 좀 과한 건 아닐까'라는 생각이 들었다. 검열은 지금도 여전히 논쟁이 많은 이슈다. 자유 민주주의 사회에서 어디까지가 도덕적이고 윤리적인 검열이고, 어디서부터가 표현의 자유인지 — 그 경계에 대해 생각해보고 싶었다.

중심에는 담배를 든 인물의 이미지를 메인으로 배치했다. 현대 미디어에서 비교적 자주 검열의 대상이 되는 담배를 소재로 선택해 검열의 상징성을 강조했다. 담배 이미지는 그대로 드러내되 주변부만 포토 모자이크로 처리했으며, 모자이크 영역에는 일상의 사진들과 검열에 관련된 이미지들을 혼합해 배치했다. 이미지 프로세싱 기술을 활용해 제작했으며, 긍정과 부정의 이미지 대비, 그리고 모자이크 자체의 반전을 통해 검열과 표현 사이의 긴장을 시각적으로 구성했다.

주제에 대한 고찰이 충분하지 못했고, 작업 안에 완전히 담아내지 못한 부분이 있다고 생각한다. 그럼에도 이 작업이 검열이라는 주제에 대해 한 번쯤 생각해볼 수 있는 작은 계기가 되길 바란다.
